Experience has taught us that the deaf can be what they will, but they must have the opportunity. Our responsibility is to make these educational dreams of the deaf come true.

—LEONARD M. ELSTAD

1950

In Florida, two peddlers went up to a bank teller and handed her a note asking for a coin bag. Suspecting a hold-up the teller triggered the bank alarm and kept stalling while the peddlers waited patiently. Finally, tired of waiting the two picked up their note and left. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were able to trace them to the home of one’s grandmother. They were taken to police headquarters where it was learned that they had only wanted a bag to deposit 2,500 coins they had collected from peddling alphabet cards. They were released and no charges were filed.
